Since I’ve never been a coach of any type I’ve picked up on some things as well. The kids are interested in playing and often play together on their own if possible. This spring we are setting up gaming computers in the school so that we can play from the building and are looking at possibly adding to the games we play.
One of our teams made it to the playoffs which was a definite accomplishment. I had students play from a local Esports Center called GUI Esports and from home in the weekly games.
In the fall we had two teams compete with other schools across Virginia. This school year we’ve moved another step forward by being told that we are able to compete through VHL sanctioned tournaments being put on by PlayVS. It was a pretty successful experience that I hope to continue this year. In cooperation with Shenandoah University we put together an end of year tournament played at the college’s Esports arena with the other high schools in the district. During that year we won a weekend tournament put on by the Navy Reserves. My district didn’t really want our team to play in any officially sanctioned tournaments by the VHL so I looked for any unofficial tournaments the team could play in while working with the district to prepare to move forward with the Esports program. Discord, while a bit iffy as far as some of the content that can be found, is the main chat application for most gamers along with Twitch.
We couldn’t really practice in a central location at first so I put together a Discord server, with help from my son, that I could easily communicate with the players. We started out during the beginning of the pandemic by having a very loose team that played the game Rocket League from their home computers. Often they seemed left out due to lack of interest. Added to this is the thought that this group of students needed a way to feel like they belonged to the school. Good idea right? The idea of bringing students who were not as interested in traditional sports programs into a program where they could compete against other schools was the goal. More specifically, an Arcana Lord.Written by UnisonEDU member, Chad Fisher. Also, I added a unicorn horn because I am a mage. The plushie on my character's head is a nod to Filo, as I'm currently not yet finished with the Granvia story quests, but I am finishing up area 1 of Rigiida - Cathedral. The headphones are meant to be like the Mobile Light Helm, the outfit is meant to be the Tomboy Outfit or the UR form, the Yearning Girl's oufit. I tried to get the gear right, but currently this was the best I could do. Anyway, I mentioned on the forum that I did this during the down time, so I might as well share it. Dev member Avia was able to let the team know and the game is back up and running thanks to his help. A number of the players went on the forum and let people know that if they were having the issue, it wasn't just their problem, and one of the members of the dev team had noticed this issue last night, but since it had been a little issue, nobody had expected it, so it hadn't seemed to be an issue. I did this today while I was bored because from 11 AM EST to about 8:30 PM EST, a LOT of Unison League's servers went down.
